Skill 4: Tariklah sebuah kesimpulan terkait Who, What, dan Where

1.       Tariklah sebuah kesimpulan terkait Who (siapa)

Hal yang umum dalam tes TOEFL Listening Part A meminta Anda untuk menarik beberapa bentuk kesimpulan. Tipe pertanyaan ini, jawaban tidak dinyatakan dengan jelas. Olehnya Anda harus menarik sebuah kesimpulan berdasarkan petunjuk yang diberikan di percakapan. Salah satu tipe yang umum dalam ditanyakan yaitu terkait “siapa yang berbicara (who the speaker is), berdasarkan petunjuk yang diberikan di percakapan.

Example:

On the recording, you hear:

   (woman)     Can you tell me what assignment I missed when I was absent from your class?

   (man)          You missed one homework assignment and a quiz.

   (narrator)    Who is the man?

In your test book, you read:

(A)    A newspaper editor.

(B)   A police officer.

(C)   A teacher.

(D)   A student.

Kata kunci seperti class, homework, dan quiz dalam percakapan memberitahu bahwa laki laki itu kemungkinannya adalah seorang guru. Olehnya jawaban yang benar yaitu (C).

2.       Tariklah sebuah kesimpulan terkait What (apa)

Jenis lain yang umum dalam tes TOEFL Listening Part A meminta Anda untuk menentukan apa yang akan terjadi selanjutnya, berdasarkan petunjuk atau kata-kata kunci dalam percakapan.

 Example:

On the recording, you hear:

   (woman)     Are you going to read those books here in the library?

   (man)          I think I’d rather check them out now and take them home.

   (narrator)    What will the man probably do next?

In your test book, you read:

(A)    Sit down in the library.

(B)   Look for some more books.

(C)   Return the books to the shelves.

(D)   Go to the circulation desk.

Laki-laki itu berkata bahwa dia ingin meminjam buku-buku itu sekarang (check the books out now).  Karena circulation desk merupakan tempat untuk meminjam buku dari perpustakaan, laki-laki tersebut kemungkinan selanjutnya akan pergi ke circulation desk. Olehnnya jawaban yang benar yaitu (D).

3.       Tariklah sebuah kesimpulan terkait Where (di mana)

Jenis lain yang umum dalam tes TOEFL Listening Part A meminta Anda untuk menentukan di mana percakapan sedang berlangsung, berdasarkan petunjuk atau kata-kata kunci dalam percakapan.

 Example:

On the recording, you hear:

  (woman)       Are you going into the water, or are you just going to lie there on the sand?

  (man)            I think I need to put on some suntan lotion.

  (narrator)      Where does the conversation probably take place?

In your test book, you read:

(A)    At the beauty salon.

(B)   At the beach.

(C)   In a sandbox.

(D)   At an outdoor restaurant.

Kata-kunci atau petunjuknya terletak pada kata water, sand, dan suntan lotion. Dari kata-kata tersebut bisa kita tarik kesimpuan bahwa tempat percakapan ini berlangsung di pantai (at the beach). Olehnya jawaban yang benar yaitu (B).

CONCLUSION ABOUT WHO, WHAT, WHERE

It is common for you to be asked to draw one of the following conclusions in listening in Part A: 1. WHO is probably talking? 2. WHAT will s/he probably do next? 3. WHERE does the conversation probably take place?

Exercise 4: In this exercise, read the short conversation and question, underline the clues that help you answer the question, and then choose the best answer. You will have to draw conclusions about who, what, and where.

1.   (man)         I'd like to deposit this check in my account, please.

      (woman)    Would you like any cash back?

      (narrator)    Who is the woman?

     (A) A store clerk.

     (B) A Bank Teller.

     (C) An Accountant.

     (D) A Waitress.

2.  (woman)     Have you deposited your paycheck yet?

     (man)          No, but that's next on my list of errands.

    (narrator)     What will the man probably do?

       (A) Earn his paycheck.

       (B) Write a check for a deposit on an apartment.

       (C) Go to a bank.

       (D) Make a list of errands to run.

3.  (man)           Did you get the bread, eggs, and milk?

      (woman)     Now we need to stand in line at the checkout counter.

      (narrator)    Where does the conversation probably take places?

      (A) In a restaurant.

      (B) At a library.

      (C) On a farm.

      (D) In a market.

TOEFL EXERCISE 4: In this exercise, listen carefully to the short conversation and question on the tape, and then choose the best answer to the question. You will have to draw conclusions about who, what, and where.

Skill 3: Hindari Bunyi Kata yang Mirip

Seringkali jawaban yang salah dalam Listening Part A merupakan kata-kata yang bunyi pengucapannya mirip tapi tentu saja maknanya berbeda. Anda harus betul-betul menghindari jawaban seperti ini.

Example/contoh:

On the recording, you hear:

Man                             Why couldn’t Mark come with us?

(Woman)                     He was searching for a new apartment.

(narrator)                     What does the woman say about Mark?

In your test book, you read:

(A)             He was in the department office.

(B)              He was looking for a place to live

(C)              He was working on his research paper.

(D)             He had an appointment at church.

Kata kunci pada baris ke dua adalah searching dan apartment. Pada jawaban (C) dan (D), kata research dan church berbunyi mirip dengan kata search, jadi ke dua jawaban ini salah. Pada jawaban (A) dan (D), kata department dan appointment berbunyi mirip dengan kata apartment, jadi jawaban ini salah. Olehnya, jawaban paling tepat yaitu (B).

Strategi menghadapi Listening Part A (skill 3):

1.      Identifikasi kata-kata kunci pada baris ke dua percakapan.
2.      Identifikasi kata-kata kunci di jawaban yang cara pengucapannya mirip dan jangan pilih jawaban-jawaban tersebut.

Exercise: di latihan soal ini, temukan dan garis bawahi kata kunci pada dari baris ke dua percakapan Kemudian garis bawahi kata-kata yang bunyi pengucapannya mirip dan pilihlah jawaban paling tepat. Ingat bahwa kemungkinan besar jawaba yang benar yaitu jawaban yang tidak berisi kata yang bunyi pengucapannya mirip dengan baris ke dua percakapan.

1. (Woman)    : I heard that Sally just moved into a new, big  house near  the beach.

    (Man)         : But, Sally doesn't have a cent!

    (Narrator)  : What does the man mean?

    (A) Sally has no sense of responsibility

    (B) Sally sent her friend to the house.

    (C) Sally has no money

    (D) Sally is on the set with her.

2. (woman    : Di they get the news over they wanted?

    (Man)       : No. They lacked the money.

    (Narrator) : What does the woman mean?

   (A) They locked the map in a car

   (B) They looked many times in the car

   (C) It cost a lot of money when the car leaked oil

   (D) They didn't have enough money to buy another car

3.  (Man)    : Have you finished packing yet?

   (Woman) : You should call the porter to get the suitcases.

   (Narrator) : What does the woman mean?

   (A) it's important to pack the suitcases

   (B) They need help carrying their bags

   (C) The man should pack his suit in case he needs it

   (D) The suitcases are quite portable
